He was known to lend a helping hand whenever he could help his grandmother.
Antoine had a passion for cars and had been saving funds for a vintage automobile. It was while visiting an auto parts store in Colorado Springs, just after 3pm on June 5th 1995, that Antoine was shot six times while leaving the store. Emergency services rushed to help him, but he succumbed to the gunshot wounds to his chest.
Police immediately ruled out robbery as Antoine still had his wallet, and due to the incident happening in broad daylight, they assumed the suspect must have known Antoine. After some investigations they found that 19 year old Kelvin Washington, whom Antoine and Kelvin had a troubled past, had shot Antoine while he was riding as a passenger with his friend Charlie Adams.
Five months after Antoine was killed, another man was murdered at the same spot in the parking lot of Goulds’ Arthur Mays Villas public housing community. See Surveillance cameras fail as crime concerns grow at Goulds housing project to read an article about the neighborhood.
The murder of Antoine was solved on Episode 2, season 7, on "Written in Blood" This is a synopsis of the episode, first aired on August 30, 2017:
This week Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda recounts the daytime shooting of Antoine McKenzie and his subsequent investigation of the case. McKenzie was gunned down during the day outside an auto parts store and yet despite this very public shooting there are no witnesses who can ID the person who killed him.
Lt. Kenda’s 20 years with Colorado Springs Police Department’s homicide unit saw him come across some strange cases but seldom did the victim write a clue in their own blood. However, remarkably McKenzie did indeed write a last message in his own blood and this is the evidence that Lt. Kenda uses to kick start his investigation.
They also soon realize it was not a robbery as the victim only had a few dollars and was still clutching the car part he had just bought. The part is for a classic car and in the parking lot they find a Dodge Charger in perfect original condition. However, the mystery deepens when the car comes back registered to a man far older than the victim.
