My mom's side of the family is Swedish (and still lives in Sweden) and she instilled in me lots of Swedish heritage and traditions which has made me who I am today. My dad's side of the family is German and Irish and the most likely the side of the family I get all my freckles from. Family is so important, and welcome everyone to discover more about them, their history, and share about their loved ones who make up the history of who we are!

Mary Jane (Portis) McCaskill was born on August 20, 1884 in Lower Peach Tree, Alabama United States, and was the mother of Nathaniel McCaskill. Mary McCaskill died at age 87 years old on January 20, 1972 in Wellsville, OH. Family, friend, or fan, this family history biography is for you to remember Mary Jane McCaskill.
This was my dad's sister and she used to keep my oldest sister Lonnie Pearl when she was very small in Ohio with her. The story was that they used to travel by train to Lower Peach Tree back then. Also, when Lonnie finished high school she stayed with Aunt Mary for a short time to work before coming back home.

As to my knowledge Leroy was born in Alabama. I think he was born in Lower Peach Tree. He married my aunt Mary Jane Portis and they had a son, Nathan McCaskill and a daughter, Pearl before they left Alabama and moved to Wellsville, Ohio where they had more children. The following names list the other children produced by Leroy and Mary Jane McCaskill; Leroy, Julius, Mary, and Rosa Lee. As far as I know they lived there until they died. It is a surety that family members live there, even now. As the Portis clan have done in Lower Peach Tree I'm sure that Nathaniel and Mary's, children, grands and great-grands have ventured to different parts of the United States and the world.
Grandfather was Thomas Portis and he was born 1853. He married Sara February 6, 1875. Sara aka as Sally father was named Samuel Zimmerman and her mother was Eva Matthews . Records show that they lived together in Lower Peach Tree, Alabama in 1870 and 1880. I'm not sure why both surnamed are used during the census. Thomas and Sally were blessed with several children David, John, Walter, Charlie, Alonzo (my dad), Samuel, Will, Pearlie, Patsey, and Mary Jane.
