Manel Eduard Martifoll Llobera Sr. of Vilanova i la Geltrú, CT Espanya was born on February 23, 1821 in Vilanova i la Geltrú, and was the father of Juan Ignacio Martifoll. Manel Eduard Martifoll Llobera died at age 58 years old on November 12, 1879 in Vilanova i la Geltrú, and was buried on November 12, 1879 in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona County.
Son of Manuel Martifoll Escofet and Francisca Lloveras Rivera. During his youth, he studied pedagogy and psychology at various institutions in Barcelona, attended painting classes at the School of Fine Arts, and actively collaborated with parish charity activities. However, what attracted him most was the world of the press and literature, in which he began in 1840 by publishing riddles and pastimes in various popular weekly publications in Barcelona under the pseudonym "Befa". From that moment, he exhibited a prolific writing style. In 1843, already in Villanueva y Geltrú and together with his companion Francisco Javier Bertran Petit, he launched the weekly La Roma Roja, which was an economic failure; only four issues were published. The following year, he founded a new publication, El Espigall, written almost entirely by himself, in which he published satirical articles on the current political affairs of Villanueva y Geltrú, but it was also a failure. Both were of libertarian tendency. In 1849, he founded the newspaper El Foll Diari, of which he was a writer and chronicler until his death. However, he handed over the editorial leadership to attend to his political and social life, passing it to Lorenzo de Cabanyes y d'Olzinelles, and José Verdú Feliu. He was a notable caricaturist illustrator and playwright. The graphic work, consisting of more than a thousand pieces in various formats, is scattered in numerous newspapers, pamphlets, and calendar sheets. It seems that he also wrote some Carnival sermons. He was actively involved in the demand for workers' rights, and in 1870, he became a councilor of the Villanueva y Geltrú City Council, where he was reportedly expelled numerous times from sessions for "obscenely ridiculing" the political power of the other councilors. Martifoll died of liver cirrhosis at the age of 58, being a popular writer in Catalonia of his time and one of the most well-known writers of Villanueva y Geltrú.
