The Tombstone of Mary (Cooke) Lefavour
Paul Lefavor took this picture and sent a copy to me. Mary was christened 20 Oct 1723 in Marblehead, MA and married John Lefavour, b 1717/1718, there on 30 May 1743. He was born in Guernsey on the Channel Islands, England and died 26 Aug 1798 in Topsfield, Essex Co, MA. Mary died a year earlier on May 28 also in Topsfield. Her tombstone is particularly interesting because of the inscription on it, put there by her son, Amos. It reads: READER PASS ON, NE'ER WASTE YOUR TIME, ON BAD BIOGRAPHY AND BITTER RHYME, FOR WHAT I AM THIS CUMBROUS CLAY ENSURES, AND WHAT I WAS IS NO AFFAIR OF YOUR." Note: I have John and Mary's grandson Thomas Lefavour's picture on this site.
