About me:
Don't really know where to start on my Foster family so I will start her !!!
The Fosters In America
The progenitor in this country came from England to Eastern Virginia, early in the
Eighteenth Century. His first name is unknown.
He was a highly respected farmer of extensive possessions.
He married and raised a family, but we do not know his wife's maiden name, nor
anything further about her. Neither do we know when nor where they were married.
Arthur Foster, one of there children, was our ancestor. Of the other children we know
nothing, except that there were others, and that they and their families visited Arthur"s
family. Arthur Foster was born in the region of country now constituting Southampton
County,Va., about 1732. The exact year seems to be unsettled,but/not later than 1735.
The County was organized in 1750. He married Martha Collier, the daughter of a wealthy
colonist, who came from England and settled in this part of Virginia.
Arthur was a man of large stature, of great strength, of very fine appearence, and
enjoyed uninterrupted good health. Martha was a beautiful woman, rather below medium
size. They lived about seven miles below Jerusalem, the court house town of
Southampton Co., on a large plantation noted for it's line orchards, and generally
tasteful and beautiful arrangement. He took an active part in the war of the Revolution,
and before it's close,he and four of his son's were in the service of the colonies.
At the age of eighty-two, still active and vigorous, he was riding in his carriage to attend
an election, when his horses suddenly started to run, and the unexpected movement gave him a wrench which so injured him that he died not many days
afterwards. His widow, Martha, survived him eight years. She was one day aroused from
sleep by the fierce burning of her clothes. She seized a bucket of water and emptied it
on the flames, completly extinguishing them, but died in a few day's from the burns
inflicted.Arthur Foster and his wife, Martha, had thirteen children - ten sons and three daughters. He had good property and educated the children well.
1. John, born Jan.18, 1761, Southampton Co.,moved to Columbia Co, GA and married Elizabeth Savidge and had children, died March 6,
1821.in Columbia Co, Ga.
2. Henery Collier, married and had children.
3. Jordan, never married.
4. Sterling, married very early, had children and died before meridian of life.
5. James married early and died soon afterwards.
6. William, quite young fell into a gum spring and drowned.
7. Lucy, born about 1773, died about 1789,sixteenth year, amiable and very beautiful.
8. Arthur, married a wealthy lady and died twenty-nine years later.
9. Martha, married a Mr. Ward, and had children.
10.Hardy, married Susan Savidge and had children.
11. Joshua, married Lucy Savidge and had no children.
12. Nathaniel, married Harriet Westbrooke, and had one son and he "Nathaniel" died.
13. Rebecca, married Thos. Vaughn, and had two sons and two daughters. This info is from an old Appendiex by the Foster family that moved from GA in 1818 to Fosters Al.
Rebecca her 2 sons and her niece were killed in 1831 by Nat Turner. the old home of Rebecca "Foster" Vaughan still stands to day and has been moved to Courtland VA. where it will be on display as the last home in 1831 that any killings took place.

2020 marks 20 years since the inception of AncientFaces. We are the same team who began this community so long ago. Over the years it feels, at least to us, that our family has expanded to include so many. Thank you!
