George Tadaichi Horiuchi of Selma, California United States was born in 1906. He was in a relationship with Mitsuye Ethel (Shimizu), and had children George Horiuchi, Gerald Takumi Horiuchi, and Dwight Horiuchi. George Horiuchi died at age 90 years old in 1996.
Gerald Takumi Horiuchi was born on September 13, 1943 in Arizona to parents George Tadaichi Horiuchi (1906-1992) and Mitsuye Ethel Shimizu (1913-2004). Gerald served in the United States Air Force from November 28, 1965 until July 10, 1979. On July 12, 1969 he married Ann Elizabeth Murphy (1947-2019) in Tarrant, Texas, USA. The couple later divorced in January of 1975.
I met Gerald in 1957 during our first year of High school. We attended Selma Union High School in Selma, Fresno County, California, and Fresno State College in Fresno, California. At college, students tended to self segregate by ethnicity when seated at tables in the library. Gerry and I made a pact to not sit at a table where everyone looked like ourself. Gerry’s parents grew strawberries on a ranch on Nebraska Ave west of Selma. My parents grew grapes on a ranch on McCall Ave south of Selma. Our fathers studied Spanish together at night school and our mothers worked together at the Sun Maid raisin packing plant between Selma and Kingsburg. Gerry’s parents took me to the coast near Cambria to pick abalone, and to the Obon festival in Fresno. Gerry was one of my groomsmen when I married Betty Lou Briscoe in the Fowler Baptist church. Gerry joined the Air Force after we graduated from college. We didn’t see one another often while Gerry was in the Air Force. He flew both fighter airplanes and bombers. He served several tours of duty in Thailand. He had hoped to join the US Foreign service after retiring from the Air Force, but his career was cut short by a heart attack after 18 years in the Air Force. He bought a house in Fresno and began working on a masters degree in the social sciences. I stayed with Gerry when visiting friends and family in Fresno and Tulare Counties. Gerry was instrumental in the formation of my world view. While I knew a great deal about biology, especially population and evolutionary biology, he had seen a great deal more of the world than I, and was familiar with other cultures, foreign policy, and international law. I learned a lot from Gerry and incorporated much of his world view into my own. Gerry’s children, Kimberley and Kevin, were of similar age as my children and they became friends as well. Both of his children have gone on to make great contributions to society. Gerry died while visiting an Air Force buddy in Victorville, California in 2001. I have greatly missed his companionship and mentoring. Photo of Gerald Horiuchi Gerald Horiuchi
