Joan Maiman was a Chicago based journalist whose output was focused on current US Military and veterans affairs. A devout Catholic, Joan also wrote about the church, and Vatican issues as well. During the Vietnam War, Joan volunteered with the American Red Cross. It was there that she started to contribute to the US Military’s world wide publication: “Stars and Stripes”. Maiman was one of the first in-country journalists to write about woman’s issues in the military during the long southeast Asian conflict which finally came to an end in 1975. For the next 35 years of her career, Maiman continued to write for the “Stars and Stripes”, the “Veteran’s Voice” and a number of other military publications. Her articles were picked up by newspapers around the country: the Chicago Tribune, the New York Times, Washington Times to name a few. She also appeared on, and co-produced a number of military and veteran advocacy television shows such as Veterans’ Forum, and Global Image. During the 1980’s, she was the chair person for the Veteran’s Leadership Conference. Her insightful reporting took her to countries around the world such as: England, Israel, Peru, Mexico, Bahamas, the Virgin Islands and Ecuador. Joan Maiman was an activist, and journalist at heart, and she will always be remembered for her dedication to the men and women who put themselves in harms way in the service of their country.
