Mary Katicich was born on July 18, 1904, in Croatia, Yugoslavia. She was responsible for tending to the family sheep herd, most of her youth and teen years, and missed a lot of schooling. Mary was from a large family, she had 14 brothers and sisters. Eventually, Mary was married to Peter Katicich (who was 23 years her senior). Peter moved Mary to the United States, they traveled by boat, because Mary was afraid to fly. They lived in a farmhouse, surrounded by a prune and apricot orchard, on Johnson Ave., in Cupertino, CA. They had two children, Mat Peter Katicich, Sr. and Mary Ellen Rajkovich. Mary worked very hard on the ranch as did her son and husband, Peter, while her daughter, Mary, advanced her schooling. After Peter's death, the family moved Mary to Willow Glen, on Butcher Way, where she tended to her beautiful gardens of flowers and vegetables, that her son, Mat, had brought dirt for, from his cherry orchard, in Stockton. She also attended the local Catholic church and visited her husband, Peter Katicich's, grave whenever she had the chance, as she didn't ever drive a car. While living in Willow Glen, Mary enjoyed the company of family and many friends. The only family member, in Croatia, that got to visit Mary, in the United States, was her brother Pavo. Mary passed away on March 31, 1996, in San Jose, Santa Clara, California, at the age of 91. She is buried next to her husband, Peter Katicich, at the Santa Clara Mission Cemetary.
