Gertrudis Oca era mi bisabuela. La conocí como abuela Elcira pues ese era el nombre por el que la llamaban la familia y los amigos. A abuela le gustaba cocinar y aunque yo era muy pequeña, recuerdo llegar a su casa y ver la mesa servida con diversos platos. Me gustaba asomar la cabeza y ver cuando abuela abría el refrigerador porque siempre estaba repleto de dulces caseros hechos por ella: casquitos de guayaba, dulce de coco, arroz con leche...Su casa era una suerte de dulcería. No alcanzaba yo los cuatro años cuando una imagen y olor se grabaron en mi memoria. Abuela me preguntó ¿Quieres merenguitos? Por supuesto que quise. Tomó un cartucho y abrió un antiguo pomo de aceitunas, lugar donde los guardaba. Ese día, ese sabor me hiciero muchos años después tratar de elaborar los merengues como abuela. Ya ella no estaba y no había quien me enseñara o diera la reseta. Las comunicaciones entre Cuba y USA eran casi nulas, pero yo quería crear unos merengues idénticos. Después de muchos intentos fallidos, lo logré. Al igual que ella disfruto cocinar y hacer platos diversos. Son increíbles el poder de la sangre, los gustos y la herencia.

Gertrudis (Paz Cabeza) Oca of Hialeah, Miami-Dade County, FL was born on November 24, 1902 to Sebastiana Cabeza and Narcizo Paz Sierra. She married Jesús Oca, and they were married until death separated them. She married Juan García Valentín and they later divorced. They had children Antonio García Paz, Miguel García Paz, and Isabel García Paz. Gertrudis Oca died at age 86 years old in June 1989.
