She’d hand me an empty colander and point to her garden across the one-way street. There she grew sweet corn and huge raspberries (my earliest recollection is based on a photo I have of her standing next to me in her flower garden at age 2 1/2, both of us grinning like Cheshire cats). I’d proudly return with a colander maybe 1/2 full. She’d pat my head, stick out her tongue, and I’d follow as she smiled, seeing my tongue stained by the fruit of my labor.

Helen Yakubec of Proctor, Rutland County, VT was born on October 30, 1886, and died at age 90 years old in January 1977.
