Jane was born in 1933 in Indianapolis, IN, to John Parret Collett and Mary Elizabeth Hamilton Collett. She attended Smith College, after which she met her first husband, Brad Johnston. Jane and brad were married for 25 years, and had three sons; Michael, Charles, and Scott (named after Dr. Scott, the pediatrician who got him through both prematurity and Erythroblastosis Fetalis). They raised their sons in Milwaukee, WI. Jane and Brad divorced in 1981. Michael (Mike) went on to become a writer and editor, focusing on photography. He has since been published multiple times in The New Yorker. Charles (Charlie) had a career as an Internal Medicine and Pediatric physician in Chicago. Scott was a clinical psycholgist in Rhode Island before his untimely death from cancer in 2021. Jane remarried, to John Woodward Thomas, in 1989. They were married until John's death in 2022, and lived in Cambridge near John's work as a professor at Harvard. Brad died from dementia in 2020, and is buried in Culpeper National Cemetary.
