I had Ella as a First grade teacher in 1955 of course back then we all called her Mrs. Zieseniss. She always started the school day with a bible verse and Pledge of Allegiance. I remember my first day in school and she called me by my first name Noel, I didn't know that was my name because my mom & Dad called me by my middle name Max. It took me over a week till I told my mom the teacher was calling me by Noel and she told me that was my name what a shock for a 7-year-old. But everyone in the class knew she loved us all. She worked with me to correct my speech problems.
I remember the little field trips behind the school to a pond where we learned about tad poles and butterflies. Most of the children in my class lived on farms so we all learned about crop rotation and which minerals were removed from the soils and which crops would put them back in. My parents owned a Motel on US30 so I would ride the bus daily.
It was really enjoyable on show and tell day where my classmate would bring in baby farm animals' pigs, and an assortment of others including a skunk. I really enjoyed school and even attended bible study before school started,
I failed first grade and repeated it I was rather a sickly kid. But repeating made me even wanting to do better.
She instilled in me the want of knowledge and to live my life with respect for others.
My education went on and in college studied medicine, law and engineering.
worked at a number of hospitals and NASA and even the YMCA as a property manager for 26 years.
It was because she could see in me that light that she nursed that made me the person I am today at 75 years old and I have never forgotten her.

Ella F (Kretchmar) Zieseniss of Crown Point, Lake County, Indiana was born on January 8, 1899 in Illinois United States, and died at age 87 years old on July 8, 1986 in Crown Point, IN. Ella Zieseniss was buried at Maplewood Historic Cemetery in Crown Point.
