Red Star Line
A copy of a copy of a picture of a docking area of the Red Star Line and Holland America Line, taken from bow of ship
This photo is a print of a negative found in my grandfather's personal papers. The mystery is this: His mother left him at the age of 18 mos. and he spent a lot of time and effort trying to find her. She was born Mary Anna Rouse in 1853. She went by her mother's maiden name, Black, as did some Europeans in those days. I have looked at some of the ships passenger lists but have not found much luck. The only entry that I did find was for the "Germanic" - Mary Black arrived 17 Oct. 1881. I found with this negative, a negative of two lovely ladies, circa 1900. Also with this was a picture of the sea with a dull image of land afar off. There was no explanation, from anyone in the family.

Hugh Black and his Big Deer
Newspaper clipping of man with large buck draped over 1905? automobile. Show-off.
This photo clipping has no newspaper name or date attached. It was found in my grandfather's wallet, along with his fishing license, etc. My grandfather's mother, Mary Rouse, (Black, by her mother's maiden name) left her husband, Decker A. Rolison, son Matthias, 2 1/2 yrs., and my grandfather, Joseph Elias Roleson, at 18 mos. We have no idea where she went or why. Through research, I found a Hugh Elias Black, living in the Lancaster, PA area, but I have no connections. I only know that my grandfather, Joseph Elias, born 1873, died in 1927, must have found a half-brother? or a cousin. Mary Anna Rouse was born in 1853 in Frankford, Sussex County, NJ. Her father was Benjamin Rouse and mother was Elizabeth Black.

Mary A
This picture is of Mary Rouse and perhaps her sister Catherine. Mary was born in 1853 to Benjamin A and Elizabeth Black Rouse, in Branchville, Frankford Twp. Sussex County, New Jersey. She may have emigrated to Ireland about 1875, leaving her husband, Decker A. Roleson (Rolison) and her two sons behind. Zenas Rouse witnessed the marriage of Benjamin and Elizabeth. I have only found one of his name living in the State of New York.
