**A Legacy of Music: The Story of a Craftsman Named Rudolph Fiedler** It all began with a double bass that I inherited from my great-uncle Alois Nekvasil. Alois was the best storyteller in the entire town of Skalice. “Boys, let me tell you how it was during the first war—I was with the music. An Italian countess fell in love with me. Music always opens unexpected doors,” he would say, his eyes sparkling with memories. In his tales, he never failed to mention his friend, Rudolf Fiedler from Boleslav. Though Rudolf studied law, his heart belonged to music as a passionate violinist. They bonded over shared humor and a love for melodies that transcended their different paths in life. Aside from the countess and his love for music, my great-uncle had another significant passion—pottery. It was through these endeavors that I discovered my talents, which, perhaps because of the double bass, flourished primarily in the art of violin-making. From the very beginning, I knew that my pseudonym would be Rudolph Fiedler. In Czech, it might evoke the word “fidlat,” which means to play a string instrument, yet it was the family tradition of humor that led me to learn about Professor Fiedler from Vienna, often mentioned as a frequent opponent of Jára Cimrman. I never delved into whether they had any connection with my great-uncle’s famous namesake or if Jára Cimrman had ever played my first double bass. Today, after more than twenty years, my musical instruments are played by musicians in several orchestras in Prague, across the United States, throughout Europe, and even in Japan and beyond. For several years now, I have been studying the craft of violin-makers from Cremona, and soon, our family will have its own workshop there. As the family evolves, so does my craft. We are on the cusp of a new era in violin-making, preparing tools for both repairing and creating violins—skills I honed years ago at a prestigious German company and perfected in an American firm. It's important to note that the tools we are developing are of my own design; after all, I am an engineer, and I remain true to my profession. My passion for wood and its acoustic properties has led me to conduct serious research over the years. Everything is intertwined by a thread of music, giving my work meaning, resulting in the creation of magnificent instruments that you can find in our region today. And so, the story of my journey continues, echoing the rich legacy of music and craftsmanship that my great-uncle Alois so cherished, forever intertwined with the spirit of Rudolph Fiedler.
