Charles Syphax & William B. Syphax
Charles Syphax (1791-1869) and William B. Syphax
Charles Syphax, husband of Maria Syphax, holding his grandson, William B. Syphax. He oversaw the dining room, and was highly regarded in the slave community at Arlington House. (Custis-Lee Mansion Arlington National Cemetery)
Syphax was a leader among the Arlington slaves. Many of the most important decisions concerning the management of the household were left to him. Syphax and his wife, Maria Carter, had a large family. They lived on their own land adjoining the plantation. His health seriously declined in his final years. The Syphax children attained positions of leadership in the field of education and served as elected officials. Many of their descendants still live in Arlington County.

African - American Man with Guitar
This is a fragment of 8x10 photo showing an African-American man with a guitar, possibly from the 1930s. There was another fragment, now lost, of a Caucasian man wearing an old-style baseball cap, possibly with logo. He was holding a banjo or ukulele. Because it was 8x10, I suspect this might have been a publicity photo, and that this duo may have been professional musicians, or aspiring professionals. Background shows stacked cord wood and an apple tree, possibly rural or non-urban setting. The white fellow, as I remember, was early 20s in age, fair-skinned, possibly red-head, with pointed chin.
Who is this fellow?

Thanksgiving Turkey, 1900
A woman sitting on her porch plucking the Thanksgiving turkey while a man looks on. Oh yes, Thanksgiving is women's work!
Look at the pile of feathers at her feet - then look at how much of the turkey she has plucked. This must haven taken hours. And you have to get all the pinfeathers, too. I like today; go to a store, buy a naked turkey, stick in the oven!

Jack Johnson 1910 Champion Heavyweight
Jack Johnson in 1910 looking through the steering wheel of his Thomas Flyer automobile, with another man seated next to him. This race car was a 90 horse power Thomas Flyer.
Jack Johnson was the Heavyweight Boxing Champion in 1910 and he wanted to race Barney Oldfield, who was the most famous race car driver of the era. The race did occur but I can't find who won - do you know?

George Roberts
A photo of George Roberts, slave to freeman privateer. In the fall of 1812 he served onboard Captain Richard Moon’s privateer 'Sarah Ann' and was among six American seamen accused of being British subjects and taken prisoner when the Sarah Ann was captured by HMS Statira off the Bahamas on September 13, 1812. Captain Moon denied that they were British:
Eventually, Roberts and the other American seamen were released. After the war, it is unknown what trade he had as a freeman or if he continued serving on-board various merchant vessels from the port of Baltimore, Maryland. What is known is that he was allowed to participate as one of the Old Defenders’ of Baltimore of 1814 during parades commemorating the anniversary for many years.
He lived to the age of 95 (1766 -- 1861)
