Albert James Gourd was born on May 27, 1890 in Hotham, North Melbourne, Victoria, Australia to parents James John Hore Gourd (1865-1903) and Angelina Williams (1866-1960). He had siblings Elizabeth Anstis Gourd (1891-1974), Alfred Gourd (1896-1896), and George Gourd (1902-1965).
He was a farmer. Albert enlisted in the Australian military in 1914, at the age of 24. His enlistment place was in Traralgon, Victoria, where he likely underwent basic training before being deployed overseas to serve his country.
In 1925, he married Nellie May Irvine (1887–1947) in Victoria, Australia and the couple had a daughter together, Dulcie Caroline Gourd (1925-2017). The family lived in Ouyen, Wimmera, Victoria, Australia.
