Lucky for Danny Kaye, Donald O'Connor became sick and was unable to shoot the film after Fred Astaire declined the project.
Even though Vera-Ellen's character Ellen played the younger sister to Betty (Rosie Clooney), Rosemary Clooney was 7 years younger.
The film took in $12 million dollars in 1954. Tickets were approximately 25¢ for children under 12 and 50¢ for over 12 & adults.
Some attribute Bing's laid back attitude to smoking marijuana, which he admitted to when it was legal early in his career. In the 1960's and 1970's, he told interviewers that he supported the decriminalization of marijuana.
Whatever the reason, Bing Crosby always portrayed the image of an easy going man and this was amplified by his easy and soothing singing.
He was born Harry Lillis Crosby in May of 1903 (the same month and year as Bob Hope)in Tacoma Washington - certainly Tacoma's most famous son! Seeing Al Jolson on stage in Spokane when Bing was just 14 inspired him to become a performer. When he was 23, Paul Whiteman hired him as a boy singer . . . and the rest is history.
He starred in movies, radio, and television. When I was a child (and into early adulthood), Bing's Christmas show on tv (which included his family) was the highlight of the season.
Bing also started the "Crosby Clambake", a golf tournament at Pebble Beach, in 1937. He was an avid golfer and he died in 1977 after playing a round of golf in Spain.
Here, they are doing a 1945 radio appearance for NBC - it looks like they're fooling around as they always did!
