John Hinton Cumper was born in December of 1837 in Beachley, Gloucestershire, England to parents James Cumper (1808-1876) and Hester Morgan (1813-1887). He had siblings Ann, George, Henry John, Julia, Emma Jane, Charles, Oliver, Louisa, and Danny Cumper.
He was baptized on December 31, 1837 as a Hinton. He later changed his name to John Hinton Cumper many years after arriving in Victoria, Australia but was then known locally as Jack. He went by many name variations.
Cumper worked as a sailor and a miner/mine managaer. He then immigrated to Australia and married Margaret Jane McLean (1849-1926) in 1869 in Maryborough, Victoria, Australia.
They had children together; George (1866-1923), Julia (1868-1951), Charles (1870-1930), Annie (1872-1947), Mary (1875-1916), Margaret Jane (1878-1945), James (1881-1939), John Hinton (1883-1961), Richard (1886-1944) and Alexander Cumper (1888-1970).
