Betty Martin died at age 81 years old on November 14, 2013.

    Betty Jean Martin, 81, of Evington, VA, died Thursday, November 14, 2013. She was the wife of Gordon Martin. Born Saturday, September 3, 1932 in Spartanburg, SC, Betty Jean was a daughter of the late Grady T. Carter, Sr. and Martha Fleenor Carter. In addition to her husband, Betty Jean is survived by sons: Dennis (Donna) Thornton of Glenn Springs, SC, Larry (Billie Sue) Thornton of Gafney, SC, Mark (Cindy) Thornton of Lynchburg, VA, and David Thornton also of Lynchburg, VA and daughter, Diane T. Abee of Pacolet, SC.; thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Betty Jean was preceded in death by a son James T. Thornton; six brothers: Doyle Carter, Raymond Carter, Grady Carter, Jr., William Carter, Donald Carter and Joel Carter; and sister: Margaret C. Cook. Betty was known by many and loved by all. Always helping others and sharing her love for Jesus Christ. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:30 PM, Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. A graveside service will be conducted at 12:30 PM on Monday, November 18, 2013 at Fort Hill Memorial Park with Pastor Mack Almond, Jr., officiating.
