  • Professional Career

John's trucking company serviced most of the major fruit and vegetation companies located in the San Jose Bay Area. In addition to servicing the Del Monte cannery in West San Jose, the Doudell trucking company also serviced the United States Products cannery which was located at 570 Race Street just above Moorpark. The USP was actually a spinoff of Clessing - a Dutch conglomerate - which wanted to divest into the flourishing San Jose orchards industry. At the start of World War 2, the USP fell into bankruptcy in June 1943 and John Doudell was listed as a trustee of the company. The trustees got into trouble in 1944 as they had leased the cannery to Sunnyvale's Schuckl cannery for the 1943 season, and the person in charge of the bankruptcy filings gave the trustees a lesson in their fiduciary duties of keeping the USP business in business, not changing the business model. The USP continued to lease out their cannery as it was used by the Clapp baby food company in 1944 & 1945 as the baby food company built their new West Coast plant on Newhall Ave in San Jose. The United States Products ended up being owned by Carl N. Lovegren, a prominent San Jose canner who was found dead in his car in San Jose in 1950. After his death the company was sold to Consolidated Grocers, a Chicago-based wholesaler that had been the owner of the Rosenberg Brothers dried fruit business. Potential mafia connection? Who knows.

John W Doudell, husband to Rose McKeon Doudell and father to upwards of 13 children, started one of the first trucking and transportation companies in San Jose, California.

His first truck was used for his own business, and he utilized the truck off hours helping all of the canneries and farmers in San Jose transport their products. Eventually, transportation services became his primary business as he gradually added more and more trucks.
