John H. Going's History: circa 1787

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

John H. Going (variant Goens) is the son of Aggy and Moses Sr, born after the Goings migration to GA from VA in 1787. By 1830 John H. had migrated from GA to KY where he married ca 1845 Sarah "Sally" LNU. The couple were parents of at least five children, all born KY. On 6 May 1847 John H., who was considered FPC, applied to the Crittenden circuit court in KY for manumission papers so he could travel to Claiborne MS to settle the affairs of his brother Dr Thomas Going as it was understood he was one of his heirs. In the petition it was stated his mother Agnes was "Indian by Blood". He needed papers to travel due to the fact he was so dark he might be mistaken for a runaway slave. Others testified. "The Crittenden County Court approved the application May 29, 1847 and provided a document to John H. Going stating that he was a free man of color and had been since birth and was therefore entitled to all rights thereof." -- source Gowen manuscript & Nunns of the South
