James Reston Nish was born on August 9, 1825 at Galloway, in Scotland United Kingdom. He was married to Margaret (Young) Nish in 1855 in Bendigo County, Victoria Australia, and they were together until death separated them. He had children Janet Henderson (Nish) Thom, Mary Henderson (Nish) Mackay, John Henderson Young Nish, Augusta Elizabeth Nish, Dr. James Alexander David Nish, and Samuel George Nish. James Nish died at age 66 years old on October 11, 1891 in Armadale, Stonnington City County, VIC Australia, and was buried at Bendigo Lawn Cemetery, LOT 200N Burnside St, in Quarry Hill, Greater Bendigo City County.

In 1825, in the year that Rev. James Nish was born, on October 26th, the Erie Canal opened. Construction had begun in 1817 and the completion of the canal provided passage from Albany New York to Buffalo New York and Lake Erie. Previously, pack animals had to be used to transport goods - there were no railroads - and the canal allowed goods to be shipped relatively easily and quickly.

In 1837, by the time he was only 12 years old, on January 26th, Michigan became the 26th state admitted to the United States. Previously part of the Northwest Territory, the area bordered four of the five Great Lakes. The Erie Canal opened up the area, bringing settlers and therefore statehood.
