Violet Ethel Leishman of Altona, City of Hobsons Bay County, VIC Australia was born on July 23, 1892 in Trafalgar, Baw Baw Shire County to Thomas John Leishman and Catherine "Kitty" Matheson. She had siblings Richard Andrew Leishman, Margaret Marjorie Leishman, James Alexander Leishman, Walter Ross Leishman, David Robert Leishman, and William John Leishman. She married Percy Francis Johnstone in 1919, and had a child Catherine Fay Johnstone. Violet Leishman died at age 91 years old on February 3, 1984 in Altona, City of Hobsons Bay County.

In 1892, in the year that Violet Ethel Leishman was born, on October 12th, the "Pledge of Allegiance" was first recited in unison by students in U.S. public schools. Composed the previous August by Francis Bellamy, it was to be recited in 15 seconds and originally read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." "Under God" was added in the 1950's.

She was the first woman to hold an elected Federal office. Holding the office for two years, she ran again in 1940 and served another two year term. Montana had granted women unrestricted voting rights in 1914, 6 years before women got the vote nationally.
