Bradley Dean Rafferty was born in Cloverport, Breckinridge, Kentucky, USA to parents Bradley Turner Rafferty (1851-1932) and Elizabeth Thomas 'Lizzie' Dean (1887-1922). He had brothers William (1910-1990), Robert (born 1915), and Harry Rafferty (1921-1921). He also had half siblings Mary, Henry, and Douglas Rafferty.
He grew up in Cloverport, Breckinridge, Kentucky, USA and Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky, USA and later moved to Michigan living in Lansing and Grand Rapids.
On May 13, 1940 he married Helen Elizabeth McNally in Belding, Ionia, Michigan, USA. They had children together.
