I can remember doing the maypole in school as a child.....since then, nothing...
My mom told me about what they did for May Day back in the 1920s. I don't think it's been done since. Sad!
I started grade school in 1960. I don't remember doing anything for May Day. I do recall making flower baskets out of construction paper but I am not sure what it was for.
We made May baskets at school and at home in the early 60s and there were maypoles around back then too.
The American Legion put a stop to all of that! Dummies!
When I was a kid, we always either did a Maypole Dance or a folk dance for our school's May Day celebration. I also was the May Queen of the May Festival at our local city park recreation center as a child of about 9 years old. This all was in the early and mid-1960's in Southern California.

May Day originally a Roman festival which began on 28th April and lasted several days to mark the commencement of summer. In England, middle and lower classes would gather flowers - ‘go a maying’ - and the prettiest village maid was crowned Queen of the May, celebrated with dancing around the maypole.
