Bette Davis
Bette Davis was an iconic American actress, widely regarded as one of the greatest performers in the history of cinema. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1908, Davis began her acting career on Broadway in the 1920s before transitioning to film in the early 1930s. She quickly became a leading lady in Hollywood, known for her fierce determination and uncompromising attitude both on and off screen. Davis won two Academy Awards for Best Actress, for her performances in "Dangerous" (1935) and "Jezebel" (1938), and received numerous other nominations throughout her career. She appeared in over 100 films, spanning several decades and a variety of genres, from melodramas and period pieces to horror films and comedies. In addition to her acting work, Davis was a passionate advocate for women's rights and a trailblazer for actresses in the industry. She passed away in 1989, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and captivate audiences today.

Smith Brothers, WW 1
Smith Brothers, WW 1
This undated photo provided by the Smith family shows four of the five Smith brothers, who were killed during World War I, pose for a photo in Barnard Castle, England. Clockwise from bottom left, John W Stout, Alfred, George Henry and Frederick.

Queen Mary, wife of King George V, heard about the sacrifice of the brothers and intervened to send the sixth, Willie, home.

Robert 22, died first, in September 1916. George Henry, 26, died less than two months later.

Frederick, 21, died in July 1917, while the eldest, 37-year-old John William Stout — who had their mother’s maiden name because she was not yet married when he was born — died in October 1917. The fifth son, Alfred, died in July 1918.

The mother’s grief was apparently more than the vicar’s wife could bear. She wrote to Queen Mary about the deaths of Margaret’s five sons and how she had a sixth son still at war.

Although he suffered from the effects of being gassed, once home, Willie worked as a chimney sweep and a stone mason.

Bethel and Kid Holmes
When we moved to Hammonton, my father and Uncle Ira Briggs built both of our houses. They were right next to each other. Our house had one bedroom. Kid was our dog. We brought him from the ranch in Auburn (where my dad was raised). I was 4 years old.

Schmidt Wedding
Schmidt Wedding
I’ve “rescued” an old photograph of Ferdinand SCHMIDT and his bride along with two unnamed witnesses which was taken at the Hingtgen Studio in Wahpeton, ND. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900’s with Ferdinand and his bride appearing to be in their 30’s or 40’s at the time. Ferdinand is also identified as the brother of John S. SCHMIDT. I’m hoping to locate someone from this SCHMIDT Family so that the photograph can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me.

Thanks,
Shelley

Passmore Sisters
Passmore Sisters
I’ve “rescued” an old photograph of three young ladies which was taken at the Johnston Studio in Belleville, KS sometime in the 1890’s. The message on the back of the photograph says “Here we are looking at you” and is it signed by Sadie PASSMORE to Mrs. EUSTICE with compliments. I believe that Sadie is likely one of the young ladies in the photograph based on that message, but I don’t know who the others might be, or what their relationship to Mrs. EUSTICE might be, their teacher maybe. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding Sadie and what may be at least one of her sisters (Grace PASSMORE) in the photograph as well:

Sarah Esabel “Sadia” or “Sadie” PASSMORE was b. 23 Feb 1884 in Belleville, KS to parents Henry Gabriel PASSMORE (1845-1929) and Margaret “Maggie” FAGAN (1855-1944). She was one of 14 children born to this couple including, Anna Laura; Mary “Mayme” Catherine; Mary Jane; Alice Maud; Johnny; Grace Idona; Sadie; Willie; Maggie May; Myrtle or Myrnee H.; Charles “Charlie” Gabriel or R.; Walter Edwin; Donald; and Harry PASSMORE all born between 1873 and 1897. Sadie married Charles Benjamin CARBUTT (1883-1981) and together they had two children, Enid M. CARBUTT (b. 1906); and Cyrus or Syrus Gabriel CARBUTT (1908-1988). Sadie died 31 Mar 1944 in Talmo, KS.

Census records provide the following details:

1900 census of Grant, KS:

Henry G. PASSMORE, age 54, born Dec 1845, married 29 years, born IL, parents born OH/KY, a Farmer
Maggie PASSMORE, wife, age 46, born Mar 1854, married 29 years, 12 children/6 living, born PA, parents born Ireland
Grace I. PASSMORE, dau, age 19, born Jan 1880, born KS, a School Teacher
Sarah I. PASSMORE, dau, age 17, born Feb 1883, born KS, at School
Myrtle H. PASSMORE, dau, age 11, born Jan 1889, born KS, at School
Charlie R. PASSMORE, son, age 8, born Nov 1891, born KS, at School
Walter E. PASSMORE, son, age 6, born Nov 1893, born KS

I am hoping to locate someone from the family so that this wonderful old treasure can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of the family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me.

Thanks,
Shelley
