I read the article, was surprised to find the picture was taken in 1942. The clothes they are wearing seem to be from the late 1800's to early 1900.

Yes, it looks like circa 1910 to us. But the owner says 1942?

Maybe 1942 is when they sold the land? Disneyland opened in 1950. Just a guess. I agree, the clothes are not 1940s unless they just liked period clothing
for the picture.

Must have been a typo, this was taken decades before, probably 1905 to 1910.

AncientFaces definitely not 1942 clothing, maybe they dressed up in those oldy worldy costumes or such.. but definitely not 1942 look at those huge bows on their necks they are early century..

Doreen Ward Disneyland opened to the public in July 1955. Maybe Walt bought the land in 1950?

Yes I think it's more like the land was sold while the picture is much older
Natalie, this would be California - Disneyland, not Disney World

Orange groves were major crops from Chula Vista to Santa Barbara. Still many groves left. Used to be excited waiting for our yearly trip to KNOTTS BERRY FARM so I could spend my saved up money to buy Orange Flower perfume at the gift shops there. I loved it!🍊🍊🍊

Smart man... even if the clothes are a bit dated; probably too busy picking oranges to get to the shops.

I love these old photos
Whoa, I agree that something is quite wrong with the date and probably the assignment of names in this photo. I knew John and Hermina Chuml. Their only child, Viera, and I attended Tustin High together the late 1960's. If I recall correctly, John and Hermina married just as World War II started. This photo simply can't be of John and Hermina's offspring. Perhaps the photo is of Leopold and Anna and their children, and one of the children is John Chuml at the turn of the century. This would align better with the style of women's clothing in the photo. Also, to further confuse this matter, by wild coincidence I noticed that an "Anna Marie Chuml" from Santa Ana graduated from my alma mater, Pomona College, in 1914, leading me to wonder if John is her younger brother. Perhaps there are Annas in two different generations in this family.
The description was revised and I believe it now reflects the correct time frame and persons. Thanks, Rhondalee!

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
