Unknown Soldier

Photo of an unknown soldier. Does anyone recognize the uniform?

This is a complete mystery. Any advice on the uniform or individual is appreciated.

That's a WWI U.S. Army uniform, the hat is that of a drill sergeant. I would need a lot more information on where the picture came from, its history, to have a better idea of where to begin looking for who it is. I cannot specifically tell if the uniform is pre-1900 though, but the buttons bear the WWI Army Eagle and they were made of brass at that time. The buttons look brass in that picture.

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
