There's something about this photo of a child with an unexploded bomb taken in 1916 France. Yes, times have changed in the past 100+ years but would you want your child to stand next to a bomb? Especially a bomb bigger than him/her?!

They're still digging up tons of that stuff every year. Farming in France is dangerous.

I live in the countryside where farms are everywhere and to date people died because of car accident not because of unhatched bombs... Yes we are digging stuff yes because we have a lot to dig but no it's not dangerous to farm in France

Perhaps not in your region, but it apparently is regarded as a risk. These shells are badly decayed, therefore unstable, some with explosives, some with chemical agents. Depends on where the battlefields were, certainly. A few years ago, a cache of shells from the civil war (1861-5) turned up in St. Louis.

That is an artillery round, actually. And hasn't been fired (no marks on it from rifling) so it is probably safe... But if she was mine, nope...

I know we have gotten way too sensitive and not as tough as we used to be that a lot of people who think they’re tough but they’re really not. Those people back then were tough and strong and not filled with hatred like people are today and think they’re tough. These people handle situations that people today have no idea about

Norma Sawicki Sharp of course they were filled with hatred. The Germans hated the French and the British. The French and the British hated Germans
Anti Jewish sentiment was on the rise Don’t ever think there was no hatred back in those days there was and it was virulent.

Joan Savell Oh I know there was hatred it was the French And British that kept inviting countries , England was famous for it. In the 1700s ,the early 1700s, The French invaded Germany my ancestors fled to England in England said they cannot take refugees but they could put them on a ship and send them to what is now in America and they can work in the camps. Do I think that the French in England or working together they wanted the Germans because we were excellent bookkeepers and genealogy has a respect for the democrats German palatines which is what I am bred from. But history also shows that my ancestors fought in the revolutionary war they were scouts for George Washington and helped in the great revelation to defeat England And we went on to defeat the French and we got them out of America to

It's not a bomb, it's a shell and hasn't been fired. The original even says "obus" - shell. In its inert state, it is just a giant paperweight.

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. For information on the folks who build and support the community see Daniel - Founder & Creator.
My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
