I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come.
I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.

My mom's side of the family is Swedish (and still lives in Sweden) and she instilled in me lots of Swedish heritage and traditions which has made me who I am today. My dad's side of the family is German and Irish and the most likely the side of the family I get all my freckles from. Family is so important, and welcome everyone to discover more about them, their history, and share about their loved ones who make up the history of who we are!

San Jose Giants - Larry Gates
Larry Gates was actively involved with the minor league baseball team San Jose Giants. I believe he was an assistant pitching or batting coach.

The Builder's Exchange of Santa Clara County - SCVCA - Larry Gates
I recognize this setting immediately as it's very familiar to me. Here is Larry Gates outside the Builders Exchange of Santa Clara County located at 400 Reed St., in Santa Clara CA 95050.
I'm not sure whose motorcycle it is, although I'd assume it's likely either one of the contractor's bikes, or that of his long time assistant's (Anita Woodson) husband.
Larry would often sit on the bench they installed after this photo was taken outside the Builder's Exchange back entrance (shown here) and smoke his cigarettes - Marlboro Reds.

Kid's Free Fishing Days - Campbell California
Larry began the Kids Free Fishing Days with the South Bay Piping Industry sometime in the 1990s. I remember I'd print out all of the flyers when I worked for Larry between 1996-2003 and I recall the 6th, 7th, and 8th or so "Annual Kid's Free Fishing Day" weekend.
Larry Gates loved kids....in fact likely more than any other man I've ever met. He treated almost every kid that he met like a member of his own family.

Lou's Village - THE restaurant in San Jose
Lou's Village opened in San Jose California in 1946. It was THE place to meet in San Jose and offered a smorgasbord, barbecued dinner, and dancing in the 5,500 square foot building.
Lou's Village created a name for itself by offering live entertainment (in which MANY Hollywood celebrities performed). In fact, many signed photos of the celebrities hung on just about every foot of the walls throughout the building.
Larry Gates would hold his Board of Directors meeting for the Santa Clara Contractors Association (SCVCA) each year with the owner operators of such iconic contractors such as Therma, O.C. McDonald, Air Systems, and many more.
The Santoro-Muller family ran Lou's Village - Lou Santoro and Paul Polizzi worked together for 25 years in the San Jose Fire Department and opened the restaurant when they retired.

Larry Gates & Anita Woodson
Shown here is Larry Gates in between Anita Woodson and I believe Anita's sister or Larry's sister. I forget since this photo was taken back in the early 2000s. The unfortunate bit is that it's possible I took this photo!
Anita Woodson worked with Larry Gates for 30 years at the Santa Clara Valley Contractors Association (SCVCA) and all of Larry's various endeavors. Anita was an extremely hard worker and got done everything that needed to be completed.
They both were very talented with money management. It's where I began to define my relationship with financial concerns.

Larry Gates - Football
Larry loved sports - specifically football and baseball. Shown here is a newspaper clipping that reads:
GETTING FITTED with shoulder pads is a problem in today's modern football round and Larry Gates, right, who hopes to become a guard on this year's Bulldog squad finds it out the hard way as new assistant coach Sampsey Harjo assists him in the selection.
Funny, protective gear was evidently a new thing in sports.

Larry Gates as a child
These are the earliest photos I've found of Larry. At the top it looks like a photo of him with his mother and one of his brothers, and at the bottom is a very excited young man. I would have a problem recognizing him from these images as I only knew the adult.

Larry always up for a party
Larry with one of his contractors, as usual always in a suit and tie, celebrating at a Christmas party during the early to mid 1980s.

Larry (born Lawrence) Gates is one of those men you always knew walked into a room. He dedicated his life to serving his country, help raise children - not just his own, always lent a hand to help strangers and friends, and the majority of his career working to support the contractors & unions that built Silicon Valley into the technology powerhouse it is today.
He is missed, but his impact lives on today through the many of us his life touched.
