Vernon Houston Miller, 1935 Virginia
Vernon Houston Miller with friends at the Masonic Home of Virginia boys at Buckroe Beach, Virginia.

The Masonic Home of Virginia was established to care for the children of deceased Masons whose mothers were still living. The resident boys and girls were given the opportunity to travel to the beach for day excursions in the summer.

Pictured here in their assorted, probably hand-me-down swimwear, are some of the teen boys in the summer of 1935. From left to right:

Herbert A. "Roughneck" Conner, Vernon Houston "Johnnie" or "Whitey" Miller (my uncle), Winston Foster, Kermit "Roy" Saint Clair, and Clay Culp.

Growing up in the orphanage, it was not uncommon for the boys and girls to have nicknames.

Judy Garland & family: This photo was taken about 1936, left to right back row is Judy (who had recently been signed to MGM and lost her father in a matter of months), her father's eldest brother, Bob Gumm, her mother, Ethel Gumm, her oldest sister, Susie Gumm, (front row) middle sister, Jimmie Gumm, Aunt Belle (Bob's wife, born Smith), Susie's husband, Lee Kahn, and Judy's cousin, Richard (son of Bob & Belle). The family was close and often came to visit. When Bob's theater was in trouble, against MGM's rules, Judy went and sang there to bring in business. Photo from Bob Gumm's family archives and included in my book, From Tennessee to Oz, Part 2 - The Amazing Saga of Judy Garland's Family History by Michelle Russell. This was an eight year adventure!

A Wrinkle - I'm getting Old! Ivory Soap
A Wrinkle - I'm getting Old! Ivory Soap
An old Ivory Soap advertisement, initially ran in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette newspaper 1937, which reads:

A Wrinkle - I'm Getting Old!
But Lady . . . "dishpan hands" makes you look older than a wrinkle does!!
"Middle-aged hands" often make people add three to five years to your age . . . yet it's easy to guard against those criss-cross wrinkles on your knuckles, that coarsening of the skin . . . Protect your hands in the dishpan. Don't use ordinary wash-day soaps for dishes - they weren't made to protect sensitive skin.

But, IVORY SOAP was. Give your hands a gentle Ivory bath every time you wash dishes - you'll be surprised how nice your hands stay. Another surprise - Ivory Soap actually costs less to use for dishes than washday chips and powders! So make Ivory your dishwashing soap today. Ask for practical "Large Size" Ivory.

Keep your hands young . . . wash dishes with Ivory Soap.

Now, this advertisement is funny, but at least back in the day marketers actually described the benefits of their products versus getting a celebrity to endorse completely un-related products :)

Hardin or Davis cousin? 1940's
This picture was taken sometime after 1948 because the badge on his jacket didn't exist before then. man in MATS US Navy jacket

This photo didn't have a description on the back. My grandma said he was her cousin, so his mother or father may have been a Hardin. If so, his grandparents would be Marcus Hardin and Roxie Richerson of Arkansas. Another possibility is that he is the son of my grandma's stepsister Gertie Dowell and her husband Arthur Davis. Does anyone recognize this person?

Mother's Day - Ann Jarvis, PA
Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis is the mother of the founder ( Anna Jarvis ) of the United States national holiday Mother's Day.

Ann Jarvis was a social activist and leader who encouraged mothers to collaborate together during the US. Civil War. She led the "Mothers Day Works Clubs" which met at local churches and provided medical care equally to soldiers from both sides.

Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis was born September 30th, 1832 in Culpeper Virginia, and died May 9th, 1905 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

Shortly after Ann's death, her daughter, Anna Marie Jarvis began a successful campaign to form a holiday to honor the contributions of all mothers in society. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson designated the second Sunday in May as the nationally recognized holiday, Mother's Day. Interesting to note, by the 1920's Anna was already upset by the quick commercialization of the holiday!
