He was born in Centralia, Washington 1877 and died in Anderson, Shasta, California in 1967 and is buried in the Anderson District Cemetery next to his wife Alyce Jane Tripp-Beall. His first marriage was in 1899 to Nellie Elvira DeHaven. (per 1900 census). They had one daughter, Madeline Beall who died in childbirth at the young age of nineteen. In Dec 1906 he married Alyce Jane Tripp. Ten years later, in 1916, they were divorced. Benjamin married again to Ella Rosetta O'Hara in Grants Pass, Oregon on 11 Jun 1936. They were divorced by 23 Dec 1944 when Benjamin wed Alyce for the 2nd time. They were married in the Church of St. Matthew in San Mateo, CA and stayed married this time until death do they part. Grandpa Benjamin died first from a self inflicted gunshot. He was suffering with his second round of cancer; his legs swelling so badly that he had to cut the legs of his pants. Being eight-nine years of age he just couldn't go through all of that again. He ordered grandma to take their dog Ginger and go next door to Mr. Compton's. She was confused by his harshness but didn't know what he had in mind. She heard the gunshot as she walked away. Grandpa never bought a home for grandma after their 2nd marriage to each other. They lived in a small but nice Air Stream trailer in Compton's Trailer Park, Anderson, CA. It was just below the lumber mill that sat on the hilltop as you are coming into Anderson and across the road from the railroad tracks. When I was spending the summers there grandpa would walk me to town to watch as the train went buy and picked up the mail from a pole it dangled from. We would count the cars and usually there were one hundred and one. Then it was on to the grocery store to buy Ginger her steak and hamburger for our dinner. I remember Grandpa hardly ever came outdoors unless it was that walk to town or to go fishing with me. He would never stop to fish where the cows were laying down because he said, "If the cows are lazy then so are the fish." He would lay in his bed and read western paperback books. He quite a collection of those as well as a full rack of pipes that he kept lit and in his mouth most of the time. Grandma's place and bed was outside on a covered porch with her bed and a small dresser. The only time she went inside was to clean and cook a meal. I don't think she was happy with grandpa's lack of interest in worldly belongings and vagabond way of living, but she had never known any other love and who can blame her for falling for this tall and handsome man. Even with all his gruff ways he could be gentle and loving at times, especially with me. What I know of Grandpa's life before marriage are mostly from the stories he told me, but in my research I have discovered that many were not true. The story he told is as follows: My dad was a railroad surveyor in Washington and Idaho. He layed the way for the Lolo Trail. He with his family lived in some very remote and uncivilized towns. My mother grew tired of this and she took my baby brother and went back to her parents in a more civilized town. She left me with my father. When I was only a boy of eight (abt. 1885) my dad was killed by Indians while surveying. An outlaw found me wondering and took me into a town. He told the towns people that they had best care for me or he would come and burn the town to the ground. (end of his story) Facts I have found...Alfred resided in Lincoln, Washington in 1889 per Washington Territory census record. In 1895 both Alfred T and Elizabeth Beall are living at 1022 McCulluh St. in Baltimore, Maryland. There is also a Mrs. Mary G. Beall living at this same address. (don't know who she was). Alfred died 15 Jul 1896. Elizabeth "Nancy" Beall died Dec 1897 in Baltimore, MD. She was a printer by trade and she is the one that trained grandpa in being a linotype operator, not some strange man as grandpa said. There is also a book called "Centralia, The First Fifty Years." In this book there is a whole chapter on the Elkanah Mills family. He was Elizabeth's father. At the end of the book there is mention of my grandpa and his brother. Grandpa was a young boy and watching his grandpa Elkanah defend and protect his propert from men that were attempting to cut through his fence. Grandpa's brother was called Sandy but his birth name (which took me many years to find) was Alexander Elmer Beall. Grandpa's application in the Oregon Society Sons of the American Revolution is also incorrect. Benjamin Lloyd Beall b. 1800 d. 1863 is not the son of William Dent Beall b. 1755 d. 1826. Also on application he states that George Taylor, signer of the Declaration of Independence was his grandmother Elizabeth Taylors father. This George Taylor died in 1781. Elizabeth was born in 1802. I do believe that for the most part my dear grandpa believed that there was truth in what he was telling me. It doesn't really matter because to me he was the best of grandpa's any one could ask for. I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
