I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.

Born and raised in San Jose California, he was a successful businessman with interests in trucking, real estate, and politics and was part of the transformation of the valley from orchards to the high-tech capitol as it's known today - Silicon Valley. Little Richard
Richard Wayne Penniman, best known as "Little Richard" was a very popular singer, songwriter and musician whose most popular work is from the mid-1950s. He's credited with being one of the founders of Rock and Roll due to his music, charisma and showmanship, and has influenced a number of singers and musicians across numerous musical genres. Richard was born in Macon Georgia to Leva Mae (Stewart) and Charles "Bud" Penniman and was the third of twelve children. It was during his childhood Richard earned his nicknamed "Lil' Richard" because of his small and skinny frame which of course would stay with him the rest of his life. His father was a church deacon, brick mason and owner of the nightclub "Tip In Inn" and his mother was a member of Macon's New Hope Baptist Church. His parents were religious and gave Richard his first introduction into live music during worship. Understanding his parent's lives likely gives us insight into how his early childhood resulted into the rock and roll star we all know. When he moved out of his family's home, Richard was taken in by a white family who owned a club in Macon where Richard began performing and honed his talent. In 1951 Richard caught his first big break where he performed on an Atlanta radio station which resulted in a record contract with RCA. In 1955 Richard began working with Specialty Records producer Arte Rupe and his career took off. One of his most famous songs, Tutti Frutti (1955) became an instance hit topping Billboard charts in the United States & United Kingdom. He enjoyed a true celebrity life - the Beatles opened for Little Richard during a tour in the UK where Richard taught Paul McCartney some of his vocalizations, he had his own television special "The Little Richard Spectacular" , was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, was a recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy and the Rhythm and Blue Foundation and received numerous other awards. Little Richard is well regarded as being one of the first crossover black artists that's talent appealed to all races. His music and concerts attracted all people despite being most popular during a time of segregation.
Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley
Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley, born into slavery and enduring hardships from the age of 4 through early adulthood, bought her & her son's freedom with funds from her dressmaking skills - thanks in large part to Mrs. Jefferson Davis, and became a successful businesswoman, author, and confidante to the First Lady Mary Ann (Todd) Lincoln. Elizabeth lost her son while he was fighting in the Union army. When the Lincoln's lost their son "Willie" it drew the two women even closer together. In fact, after the assassination of President Lincoln, Mrs. Lincoln asked specifically for one person - Elizabeth Keckley. See Centennial Scrapbook: Westward Ho Year 1866 for details. Alive during the time of emancipation, she was a role model to those recently enslaved and released: Not only by sharing her successes (& struggles) in life, but through starting the Ladies' Freedmen and Soldier's Relief Association which provided food, shelter, clothing and medical care to recently freed slaves. Frank Kroetch
Frank Kroetch was one of four siblings and was born to Dorothy Elaine (Ferguson) Kroetch and Hollis "Joe" Joseph Kroetch. As far as I know (grandson), Frank and his brother & two sisters had a bit of a rough childhood, having been separated into different groups living with various family members. He was one of the youngest to serve on the USS Killen for the U.S Navy in World War II. In fact, he lived his entire life thinking he was the youngest crew mate on the ship (he lied about his age to serve in WW2), but found out in the late 1990's at a Killen shipmates reunion in San Francisco that one lad had him beat by a handful of days. He married Marian "Joyce" Benning and had two children Kathy Pinna and Pamela Marks. He later married Carol (Antonsen) Kroetch and they raised John Kroetch. He was a very smart man (with an IQ that tested between 165 and 185) and good looking - charismatic! He was a life-long entrepreneur starting numerous businesses in various industries after attending the University of Washington and graduating from San Jose State University. He lived in both California (where his daughters were born) and Washington (where he was born and died). Frank was never baptized (as far as his child Kathy knows) and has no burial site. He was cremated and his ashes distributed between his wife and two daughters. He was quite a human being and we all miss him every day.
