A photo of Inez Milholland Boissevain. Lawyer, pacifist, feminist, suffragette, and national face of the women's movement, she married a Dutchman - she proposed to him! - and lost her American citizenship. (Women had to take the man's citizenship.)

Despite suffering from pernicious anemia and over the protests of her family, she embarked on a speaking tour for women's rights in 1916. She collapsed on stage in Los Angeles and died about a month later in a local hospital. She was 30 years old.

Her last public words were "Mr. President, how long must women wait for liberty?"

Leah and Ola Shaver
I’ve “rescued” an old photograph of Mrs. J. SHAVER’S children from Hutchinson, KS. The family address is noted on the back of the photograph as East Carpenter St. in Hutchinson. The photograph was taken at the Martin Studio in Hutchinson, KS most likely in the 1890’s with the two girls appearing to be about 6 – 8 years old at the time the photograph was taken. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding this family:

Leah F. SHAVER was b. 1889 in Hutchinson, KS and Ola I. SHAVER was b. 1891, both daughters of James SHAVER (1844-1917) and Hannah SHAVER (1852-1915). Leah died 22 Dec 1964 and Ola died in 1914 and is buried in the Partridge Cemetery in Partridge, KS. Her parents are both buried in the same cemetery along with a brother Elmer A. SHAVER (b. and died in 1887). Leah married Sylvester Anton HOFF (1881-1973) and together they had two children, Kenneth Antone HOFF (1914-1957) and Grace HOFF (b. 1916).

Martha Mansfield, Donut Fundraiser
Martha Mansfield, Donut Fundraiser
A photo of Martha Mansfield, silent movie star, selling donuts (for a dollar each) to raise funds for the Salvation Army. The men are flocking!

In 1938, the Salvation Army in Chicago created a day to honor the "Lassies" who served doughnuts to soldiers in World War 1 and to raise funds for those who were suffering during the Depression. National Doughnut Day - the first Friday in June - was born.

The history: While serving baked goods to soldiers in France, two women in the Salvation Army (Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance) came up with the idea of serving doughnuts - which were easier to make and serve. Sometimes, donuts were even made in soldiers' helmets! Serving donuts to soldiers became a tradition and it was even done during World War 2. It also became a common fundraiser for the Salvation Army - and even some large donut chains give free doughnuts on this day.

I've "rescued" three photographs which belong to the SHAW Family of Washington State. The first two are of Clara Helen SHAW WHITFIELD with both taken at the French Studio in Tacoma, WA sometime in the early 1890's with Clara likely about 3 years old at the time. The third photograph is of Clara Helen SHAW, Loren Ransome SHAW, and Henry George SHAW and was taken at the Mitchell Studio in Puyallup, WA. This one was also taken in the 1890's with the three children appearing to be about 2-6 years old at the time. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding this family:

Clara SHAW was b. 1890 and married Mr. WHITFIELD and d. 1971 and is buried in the Wright Crematory and Columbarium in Seattle, WA. Henry G. WA and he died on 13 Jul 1935 in Seattle, WA and is buried along with his siblings in Seattle, WA. Loren Ransome SHAW Jr. also appears to have been married to Emily B. LANGILL (b. 1895) but the information is confusing since his death notice lists his wife as Agnes but the last census has his wife as Emily B. – are these the same women?

All the children were born to Loren Ransome SHAW II (b. 1862 in Muskegon, MI to parents Loren R. SHAW I and Helen T. SOULE) and Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” SCLYTHE (b. 1872). Their father Loren Ransome SHAW II had only one full sibling, a sister named Carrie V. Tilly English
I've "rescued" an old photograph of Tilly ENGLISH which was taken at the Sim Mould Studio in Baraboo, WI sometime in the 1890's. Tilly appears to be in her teens or 20's at the time the photograph was taken. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding Tilly and her family:

Tillie ENGLISH was b. Dec 1877 in Sauk Co. WI to parents William Thomas or Thomas William ENGLISH (1849-1922) and Irene EVANS (1854-1900). Tillie was one of 4 children born to this couple including, Tillie; Harry E.; Izer A.; and Irene V. ENGLISH, all born between 1877 and 1895. Tillie married Ashley Bassett POWELL (1856-1941). Records indicate that the couple had two children including, John W. and Silas D. POWELL born in 1898 and 1904 respectively, however, I don’t believe that Tillie married Ashley until after the 1920 census so I’m guessing that they were children from a previous marriage. Tillie died 16 Nov 1961 in Reedsburg, WI and is buried in the Walnut Hill Cemetery in Baraboo, WI.

Census records provide the following details:

1880 census of Baraboo, WI:

Thomas W. ENGLISH, age 29, a Farmer, born VA, parents born VA
Izro ENGLISH, wife, age 26, Keeping House, born WI, parents born PA
