From 1960 to 1970 we made few trips back to to North Carolina in 1970 due to my father ill health we moved back to Cooleemee, NC and I met my aunts and uncles on both side of the family for the first time. My father passed in 1979 and I moved to California and my mother passed in 2010. My brother and his family still live in Cooleemee, NC and my sister lives in Mississippi not sure were. Since the passing of my father my brother, sister and I do not speak or visit anymore and I now live in Utah.
From 1976 to the 1977 I was in the US Air Force stationed in Biloxi, MS and Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX and was Honorable Discharged after the Vietnam War ended. Was married for a short time and now single with no family of my own.

About my family:
My parents were Wade Hamilton Crotts and Minnie Sue (Waller) Crotts, have a a brother Wade Elmer Crotts and a sister Darlene (Crotts) Avent. The Crotts and Waller families were mainly from Woodleaf, Cooleemee, Mocksville, Cleveland and Salisbury, NC area. Since I do not remember my grandparents from either side of the family I am not sure were originally they were from have heard rumors Scotland and Ireland not sure of date.
All my Aunts and Uncles I knew were land holders, farmers and one owned a dairy outside of Cooleemee and today most of that land is not farmed anymore and the Crotts and Waller families have most passed away. The last time I was there was in 2010 for a few months everyone and everything I once knew and loved about that area was gone.

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth.
So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her.

My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.

Howard's father was Thomas Wiley Barnett, 1896-1992, and his mother was Zelpha Elnora Wilson, 1903-1990. He had siblings, Virgil, Elva, Thomas, Robert, and Richard (plus one sister, name not listed).
In the 1930 census, Paul was living with his parents and siblings Virgil, Elva, and Thomas in Kokomo Indiana. His mother was born in Indiana and his father was born in Kentucky. His father, age 34, was a farm laborer.
In the 1940 census, Paul was age 18, single, still living in Kokomo with his parents and siblings Thomas and Robert. This census says that the highest grade he completed was 7th grade although on his enlistment record he states that he completed high school. He wasn't working but his father was a grinder at Spring Works (?).
At the time of his demise, he was married to Evelyn Lillian Sorich, 1919-1999. They married on October 22, 1943 and had no children. Evelyn later married John F Sheridan on February 6 1948.
According to his World War II Army Enlistment record, Paul enlisted as a private (single, no dependents) on January 2, 1942. He had 4 years of high school and was 68 inches, weighing 134 lbs. He enlisted in the Air Corps. He didn't list a date of birth, just a year - 1921.
Paul was injured in July 1944 (battle injury in the line of duty) and died in the hospital, according to military records. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
From Find A Grave:
The 455th’s emblem, the Vulgar Vulture (note: see photo under "photos"), was created by Walt Disney Studios. It was a vulture clutching a bomb in it’s talons. The 455th flew 139 combat missions before November of 1944. In April of 1944 two B-24’s were brought down by one another. Flak had struck Lt. Jerome Slater’s plane, causing it to roll over and strike Lt. Michael Callen’s plane. Only one parachute was seen to have opened. Twenty crewmen were listed as missing in action. In May of 1944, they flew 21 missions. The group put 745 B-24’s over target, dropping 1,630 tons of bombs. The casualties were high, however they kept going.
The 743rd was based at San Giovanni Field, near Cerignola, Italy. The 455th 743rd shared the base with the 454th Bomber Group.
On July 27, 1944 at approximately 1005 hrs., as a result of aggressive air attack by numerous German ME109’s and FW 190’s,
Near Bicake, Hungary five B-24 type aircraft including B-24H, S/N 42-52294 (Barnett's Plane) was shot down. The formation had so shifted about that reports were general rather than specific. The aircraft was hit in the bomb bay, caught fire, and went down gradually. It was seen to later have exploded. Paul Barnett was 23 years old.

Frank Kroetch was one of four siblings and was born to Dorothy Elaine (Ferguson) Kroetch and Hollis "Joe" Joseph Kroetch. As far as I know (grandson), Frank and his brother & two sisters had a bit of a rough childhood, having been separated into different groups living with various family members.
He was one of the youngest to serve on the USS Killen for the U.S Navy in World War II. In fact, he lived his entire life thinking he was the youngest crew mate on the ship (he lied about his age to serve in WW2), but found out in the late 1990's at a Killen shipmates reunion in San Francisco that one lad had him beat by a handful of days. He married Marian "Joyce" Benning and had two children Kathy Pinna and Pamela Marks. He later married Carol (Antonsen) Kroetch and they raised John Kroetch.
He was a very smart man (with an IQ that tested between 165 and 185) and good looking - charismatic! He was a life-long entrepreneur starting numerous businesses in various industries after attending the University of Washington and graduating from San Jose State University. He lived in both California (where his daughters were born) and Washington (where he was born and died).
Frank was never baptized (as far as his child Kathy knows) and has no burial site. He was cremated and his ashes distributed between his wife and two daughters.
He was quite a human being and we all miss him every day.
