Shorter stylish hairdo and a pretty dress. I don't know if this is her house or her Mom's house.

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth.
So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her.

My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.

Manuel Guadan was born in Fullerton, California, in 1927. He loved being outside and used to say he would wake up to the aroma of fresh tortillas being made.
He later moved to San Jose and went to the San Jose Technical High School. After school he went to World War II and ended up being part of the fighting in Normandy and at the Battle of the Bulge. He didn't talk much about the war but did like the movie "The Bridge on the River Kwai."
He married Mary Loza and became an electrician, working on the old Moffett Field hangars, near the observatory and eventually for the city of San Jose.
I remember a lot of stormy nights he had to go out and fix signals and other work, then work through the regular day. When it storms I think of him and all the others that go out to keep us safe.
He liked to hang out in his garden, watch sports, go out to good restaurants and go see relatives in Monterey.

This daughter, wife and mother grew up in Santa Barbara and Monterey. After World War II, she moved to San Jose with her sisters and mother. In 1950 she married Manuel, who lived down the street from her family. She worked for the phone company, at canneries and at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds. While caring for her son and daughter she also pitched in at their schools, helping with field trips, and attending band/choir events and teacher conferences. Marylou loved to shop and stroll through Valley Fair and then have a mocha with a treat or visit with friends. Cute hats, bright colors and a love of coats -- she had style!
