Evelyn was known for her skill as a bicycle rider as a child in Birmingham Alabama. At an early age she gave birth to Sarah who was first named Josie Mae Robinson which was changed to Sarah Simmons after her grandmother. Evelyn was first named Evergreen. I believe she was Native American and African. Her mother was the daughter of Rosa and of Eli Samuel Parker and her father was the son of Joseph, an African who had been born in Georgia or perhaps in Africa.
Richard Macon of Detroit, Wayne County, MI was born on August 21, 1921, and died at age 86 years old on October 9, 2007 at Detroit Hyde Park.
I knew Grace as a member of the Detroit Federation of Teachers in 1965. She worked with me on the Racism in Education Conference which was held at the University of Detroit. She was also active against the war in Vietnam as was I. She had been a nun but found her freedom for a while and became the girlfriend of Terry Crane who later had a sex change. She must have known something about his ambivalent inclination because she abandoned him calling him Alfie. She was a wonderful person and a champion of human rights. We have lost a champion. How did it happen?
Macon Collins had an older brother named Ben. Macon attended Barstow Elementary School and Miller High School graduating in June of 1950 with a perfect attendance record. He was a good artist and a church goer. His friends were Eugene Leverett, Sam Lawson and Ed Simpkins. He would put an apple on Omie Johnson’s desk some days in high school. He grew up in Black Bottom Detroit. He could have become anything he wanted. Very smart and talented. I lost touch with him after High School.
