Perry grew up all over Oklahoma, following his dad's jobs which caused the family to move often. For a short time, they lived in Rock Island, Illinois. But most of his time was spent in Sayre, Talequah and Midwest City, Oklahoma. As a teen he took agricultural classes and was a member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA). He graduated from Midwest City High School and then entered the U.S. Navy. Perry served 4 years in the Navy and was stationed in Washington, D.C., San Diego, CA, San Francisco, CA and Okinawa, Japan. He only spent 11 days on a ship. His career in the Navy was in cryptology. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Perry pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. He graduated in 1960 and worked at Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City. Also in 1960, Perry married Shirley Ann McGinty Sears in Midwest City. Their daughter, Melissa Ann, was born in 1961. In 1963 the family of three moved to Titusville, Florida, after Perry was hired by NASA. In 1964, son, Perry Scott came along.
