I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her. For more information about what we're building see About AncientFaces. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.

These are my great grandparents married in Fitzroy in 1888. John Samuel GREGORY was born in St Heliers, Jersey, Channel Islands c1851 according to the 1861 Census. He was in Bowmanville, Durham West, Ontario, Canada on the 1871 Census. He was also on the passenger list on Scimitar in 1873-74, London to New Zealand, although he would have been in Australia c1872 from his death record in 1903 which said 1 year in Victoria and 30 years in NSW. He had 2 previous marriages - I haven't found his first marriage, but his 2nd marriage was in Parramatta in 1881 to Emily 'Christina' WHEELER who died in 1886. They had a daughter Nellie Emetta b. 1882 in Sydney. Both marriages have that he was a Widower. The marriage in 1888 to Maggie JOYCE names his previous wife and says he had 1 child living and 3 deceased - it also has the bride's father's name as Edward which is incorrect as her father was William JOYCE, but 'Maggie' was underage (19) and parents not present - someone signed on behalf of the parents. I am starting to question Maggie's - Margaret Hannah JOYCE's birth as I don't have the actual birth or baptism for her and many researchers do not have her in their tree but I have evidence from my father of her family as one of her brothers, known to my father as Uncle Wyndy, had parents William JOYCE and Ellen FERRIS. The name Edward JOYCE needs looking into. Was it a deliberate mistake or was it maybe a previous wife's father's name - there are a lot of 'errors' in records where John Samuel GREGORY was the informant. His father also incorrectly used the name John Samuel GREGORY when he was really Samuel GREGORY but in 1864 the parents' marriage record was officially corrected to remove the John and leave just Samuel GREGORY for his father. The name John Samuel GREGORY for this John Samuel has been used as his father's name in most of his records as that is what he believed to be his father's name I suppose. This is a complicated family to research through these constant 'mistakes' in records even for the sons of this John Samuel GREGORY. I would like to find his first marriage. On his death record in 1903 only the 2 marriages in 1881 and 1888 are mentioned and the son that died from his last marriage - Walter Henry in Carlton in 1893. No mention of his 1st marriage or 3 other deceased children mentioned on marriage record in 1888. No mention of having been in New Zealand either but he was on the passenger list of the 'Scimitar' Dec 1873 to Mar 1874 London to Port Chalmers, NZ. By 1874 I believe he was in Australia but not exactly confirmed. Apparently there was not enough work for emigrants later that year according to some other research and most left NZ - returning home or going to Australia.
