Hatfield McCoy feud, KY & WV
The Hatfield McCoy feud lasted from 1863 until 1891 in West Virginia and Kentucky between two of the most infamous U.S. families; the Hatfields & the McCoys.
The Hatfield family was led by William Anderson Hatfield, nicknamed the "Devil Anse", and Randolph McCoy, aka "Ole Ran'l", led the McCoy family which emigrated from Ireland. The decades long family feud between the 'haves' (the Hatfields) and the 'have-nots' (the McCoys) began when Asa Harmon McCoy was murdered by "Devil Anse" Hatfield on January 7th, 1865. "Devil Anse" was evidently extremely upset that Asa had fought for the Union during the U.S. Civil War as the Harfield family had predominately fought for the Confederacy.
Photo of the Hatfield family clan taken in 1897.

D.T. Burrell's Christmas 1908
Photographer D.T. Burrell's photo of children on Christmas in 1908.
There's no identification of the children but the photo is entitled "Their First Glimpse" - of the tree, obviously, they're not looking at the presents!
My grandmother was born in 1908 in England and she used to describe their Christmas tree in England. She said that her parents would decorate the tree on Christmas Eve after she and her brother and sister were in bed. When they got up in the morning, the tree would be in its full glory with candles as lights. Sounds dangerous but I'm certain, from the way she described it, her face must have been just like these children's.

Gilbert & Sullivan's H.M.S. Pinafore
A member of the cast of Gilbert & Sullivan's "H.M.S. Pinafore". This photo was taken around 1879. The opera opened at the Opera Comique in London, England, on 25 May 1878 and ran for 571 performances, which was the second-longest run of any musical theatre piece up to that time. This photo was probably taken during that run.

Lincoln's Inaugural
Photo of the crowd at Lincoln's second inauguration, 1865. In the crowd are African American troops who marched in the inaugural parade. It was a rainy day at the U.S. Capitol grounds. The Civil War was almost at end. It was at the end of this inaugural speech that he said: "With malice toward none, with charity for all, ... let us strive on to finish the work we are in, ... to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations." Still words to live by.

Lillian Gish Silent Screen Star
Lillian Gish began as a star of the silent screen, but went on to have a 75 year career in movies, the stage, and television. Her last movie was The Whales of August in 1987 - at the age of 93. She died at 99 years of age.
Isn't this the most beautiful picture? The lighting, her clothes - the caption says she's wearing a pink morning gown of chiffon and lace but I think the photo is great in black and white.
