Bicycles In Action - The 1800's

Remember your old bike? Bet you loved it and have many fond memories riding around the neighborhood.

While these bikes from the 1800's are different from those today, this 1937 video provides an excellent snapshot of bicycle evolution.

You've seen pictures, maybe, but seeing them in action is just plain fascinating!

1800's Bicycle Video

History of bicycles The first verifiable bicycle was made in Germany in 1817 and was called a velocipide. Many "improvements" were made (most were 3 or 4 wheeled bikes) until the 1870's, when the high-bicycle was invented (a huge front wheel with a small back wheel). But what we would recognize as a modern bicycle was invented in the 1880's - with two equal sized wheels and a chain drive to the rear wheel. And a popular pastime for men, women, and children was born!
