Paul Gerhardt enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 19, 1942. He joined the branch immaterial, which means that his specific branch of service was not yet determined, but he was likely earmarked for warrant officer training. His mother Louisa Scheidt was born on March 28, 1882 in Stahl am Tarlyk (Stepnoje), Samara, Russia and immigrated to the US arriving in New York City on March 6, 1902. She passed away on October 9, 1970 in Denver, Colorado.
