    Paul Newton Gerhardt was born on March 25, 1963 in Douglas, Minnesota, USA to Vanessa Chapman (1942-1972) Gerhardt and Dale Leroy Gerhardt (1938-2005). He had a brother Don Gerhardt. As an adult he lived in Readlyn, Iowa where he managed a convenience store. It was there that he met his wife Marnita. After the two were married, he transferred to another convenience store in Shell Rock, Iowa, and became a volunteer firefighter with the Shell Rock Fire Department. The couple celebrated the birth of their son Aaron on November 7, 1986. Paul enlisted in the Air Force on January 20, 1988, and completed basic training and the Security Specialist Technical Training Course at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Throughout his career, he had the opportunity to serve in various assignments and he earned several honors and recognitions for his outstanding performance and contributions. He achieved the ranks of Airman First Class (A1C) in 1988, Senior Airman (SrA) in 1989, Sergeant (Sgt.) in 1990, Staff Sergeant (SSgt.) in 1990, Technical Sergeant (TSgt.) in 1997, and Master Sergeant (MSgt.) in 2002.

    His father Dale Leroy Gerhardt was born on December 27, 1938 and passed away on November 13, 2005. He entered military service and served with the Air Force in England. While there he met and married Venessa Chapman. She was instrumental in naming the "Blue Candle"; which the Gerhardt family owned and operated. After he returned to Minnesota he worked as a depot agent and later as a salesman and was in the grocery business in Welcome. The last few years he was employed at Carroll's General Store in Barrett. He was an avid bowler and fisherman.

    Paul enlisted in the Air Force on January 20, 1988, and completed basic training and the Security Specialist Technical Training Course at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Throughout his career, he had the opportunity to serve in various assignments. These included the 92nd and 858th Missile Security Squadrons (SAC) at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota; the 91st Operations Support Squadron (AFSPC) at Minot, North Dakota; the 604th Munitions Support Squadron (USAFE) at Noevenich Air Base, Germany; the 568th Security Police Flight (USAFE) at Ramstein Air Base, Germany; the 568th Squadron (AFSPC) at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana; and the 341st Missile Security Squadron (AFSPC) at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana. In March of 2005, Paul arrived at his most recent assignment in the 95th Security Forces Squadron at Edwards Air Force Base, California. During his time with the 95th SFS, he took on various roles and responsibilities. These included serving as Flight Sergeant, being deployed to Bagram as personnel Squad Leader, fulfilling the Additional Duty First Sergeant role, and most recently, serving as the NCOIC (Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge) of the Regional Confinement Facility. Throughout his career, Paul earned several honors and recognitions for his outstanding performance and contributions. These include the 857th Security Police Group Outstanding Security Forces First Term Airman of the Year in 1989, NCO of the Quarter for the 568th Security Police Squadron and 86th Security Police Squadron in 1997, Staff NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) of the Year for the 86th Fighter Weapons Squadron in 1998 and NCO of the Quarter in 1999, NCO of the Quarter and NCO of the Year for the 341st Missile Security Squadron in 2003, SNCO (Senior Non-Commissioned Officer) of the Quarter for the 95th Security Forces Squadron in 2006, and SNCO of the Quarter for the 95th Mission Support Group in 2006. Paul's dedication and hard work led to his promotion through the ranks. He achieved the ranks of Airman First Class (A1C) in 1988, Senior Airman (SrA) in 1989, Sergeant (Sgt.) in 1990, Staff Sergeant (SSgt.) in 1990, Technical Sergeant (TSgt.) in 1997, and Master Sergeant (MSgt.) in 2002. In recognition of his service, Paul received several military decorations, including the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal with a bronze star. Paul pursued professional development throughout his career and completed various educational programs. He graduated from the Non-Commissioned Officers Preparatory Course, Security Forces Seven Level School, Non-Commissioned Officers Academy, and the Senior Non-Commissioned Officers Academy through correspondence.

After graduation from Pipestone, he managed a convenience store in Readlyn, Iowa, where he met his wife, Marnita. While living in Shell Rock the couple celebrated the birth of their son Aaron on Nov. 7, 1986.

Paul enlisted in the Air Force on Jan. 20, 1988, and completed basic training and the Security Specialist Technical Training Course at Lackland Air Force Base, Tex. Paul and his family spent frequent holidays with his grandparents. He was an accomplished bowler and loved to spend time with his friends and family. He considered his wife and son his best friends. He also had a strong hunger to always learn accompanied by a strong sense of duty and honor. He was selfless and never passed up an opportunity to lend a hand to anyone be they friend or stranger. Twice during his military career he removed his name from consideration for promotion so that someone else could have an opportunity to advance.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Vanessa (1968); grandmother, Nora Gerhardt; maternal grandparents, Ken and Dell Clapham; and his father Dale (2005).

He is survived by his wife, Marnita; son, Aaron; brother, Don (Ginny) of Wausau, Wis.; uncle, Glen Gerhardt (Patricia) of Bloomington; grandfather and step-grandmother, Don and Gladys Gerhardt of Hoffman. Other survivors include cousins: Jacquelyn Gerhardt, New York City, Bobbi Galush (nee Gerhardt), Minneapolis, Sean and Amy Goettsche, Burnsville, Brenna Goettsche, California, Shannon Goettsche, Bloomington; nephew and nieces: Nick Summers, Milwaukee, Shannah Kruse, Wausau, Wis., and Katelyn Gerhardt, Madison, Wis.

Arrangements were with the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Hoffman.
