He is the son of Frederick James Gerhardt (1863-1942) and Martha M Moulder (1867-1945) and he grew up with siblings Myrtle (1885-1983), Ivy J (1889-1989), Bertha L (1893-1988), Alex (1896-), Albert (1896-), Pheoba D (1900-1982), Opha M (1902-2001), and Alva G Gerhardt (1905-1970). His military service spanned several decades, and he served with distinction in the United States Air Corps. Paul first enlisted in the Air Corps on January 28, 1931. He served for nearly nine years until his discharge on July 31, 1939. During this period, he likely received training and gained experience in various roles within the Air Corps. After a brief break in service, Paul reenlisted on July 5, 1940. With the outbreak of World War II, his expertise and experience would have been in high demand. He continued to serve in the Air Corps, which had been renamed the United States Army Air Forces during the war. Subsequently, in 1947, the Army Air Forces transitioned into a separate branch known as the United States Air Force. During World War II, Paul served as a Master Sergeant in the Air Corps, contributing to the war effort in a leadership capacity. Paul later married May Viola Reynolds Gerhardt (1909-1990) and together the couple had children Paul E. Gerhardt (1942-1954) and Ernest Kay Gerhardt (1946-1965).
