He had a sister Freida Gerhardt (1912-1940) as well as six half siblings. He grew up in Moundridge, McPherson, Kansas and North Yantic, Blaine, Montana. On Augsust 3, 1934 he married Jennie Jacobson (1913–1974) in Glasgow, Valley, Montana and the couple resided in Great Falls, Cascade, Montana. Paul enlisted in the military on January 1, 1942, in Missoula, Montana. At the time of his enlistment, he was married and had completed one year of college education. Paul joined the Air Corps, which was a part of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during World War II. As part of the Army of the United States, he enlisted as a Private.
