Paul Frederick Gerhardt was born on October 2, 1924 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA to parents Carl Fredrick Gerhardt (1897-1961) and Marie Schmidt Gerhardt (1898-1979). He had siblings Evelyn Dorothy Gerhardt (1920-1996), Geraldine Marion Gerhardt Kalas (1926-1992), Alma C. Gerhardt Paradies (1929-2021), and Carl Frederick Gerhardt (1934-2012). He enlisted in the military on November 10, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. He became part of the Quartermaster Corps, a vital branch responsible for providing supplies, equipment, and support services to the Army during wartime. At the time of his enlistment, Paul held the rank of Private in the Army of the United States. Paul married Eleanore Kozlowski Gerhardt (1927-2010) on January 24, 1946 in Cook, IL and together the couple had three children: Paulette Fay Gerhardt Young (1946-1978), Paul Fredrick Jeff Gerhardt (1947-1997), and Pamela Ann Gerhardt Serwas (1956-2017).

The Army of the United States included those who voluntarily enlisted after December 8, 1941, as well as National Guardsmen with one-year enlistments that expired while in federal service, and officers appointed under Army Regulations 605-10. Paul's terms of enlistment were "Enlistment For The Duration Of The War Or Other Emergency, Plus Six Months, Subject To The Discretion Of The President Or Otherwise According To Law." This enlistment term was commonly used during World War II, allowing the military to retain personnel for the duration of the conflict and a short period thereafter, based on the President's discretion or other legal provisions. During his service in the Quartermaster Corps as a Private, Paul would have played a crucial role in ensuring that the Army had the necessary supplies, equipment, and logistical support to carry out its missions effectively.
