Carroll and Harold were on leave together probably sometime either in 1947 or 1948. Always practical jokers and fun-loving, they decided to have their picture made at a photographer's studio. The background in the picture is a backdrop. They knew that their mother, Nora, would not approve of them being in a bar (see the Wiskey [sic] sign over Harold's shoulder) so the purposely selected this background to poke fun at her. She was not amused, I was told.
Harold David Akridge, Sr, was the second-oldest son of Carl Daniel Akridge and his wife, Nora Lee (Kelly) Akridge. He was less than 10 minutes younger than his fraternal twin brother, Carroll Daniel Akridge. Carroll and Harold were born in the small town known as Laney located in Mitchell County, Georgia in 1928. Sometime between 1935 and 1940, Carl Akridge moved his family to Hartsfield, Colquitt County, Georgia, just a few miles from where they were living. Both brothers were quick witted, fun loving, and hard working. Harold joined the Army Air Corp and Carroll joined the Navy at the end of World War II. Both had been working for many years by this time for their father, Carl, who was a blacksmith and automobile mechanic.
After Harold's time in the Army Air Corp, he returned to Colquitt County and married Bobbie Turner. They lived in Moultrie, Colquitt County, Georgia. They had four children. Harold was an automobile mechanic and worked for Wright Motor Company, the local Ford Dealership, before starting his own business with a business partner. At the time of his retirement, he was the sole owner and operator of Akridge Garage in Moultrie, Georgia.
The children of Carl and Nora Akridge are, in birth order: Mabel, Mildred, Hazle, Carroll, Harold, Jack, Lonzo, Robert, and Margaret.

Photos of the 1900's which brought us from the industrial age to the technological age.
From 1900 through 1999 we witnessed the beginning of flight to a man on the moon and a Mars Rover. We went from using phones tethered by cords and computers that filled rooms, to carrying the equivale...
Coming out of the Great Depression, the world faced another challenge in the 1940's: World War II. Although the war began in the 1930's, it expanded and gained in ferocity (and atrocities) in the 194...
Those ancestors of ours had a sense of humor - amateurs and professionals!
Based on the solemn non-smiling expressions of our ancestors in old photos, you'd think they didn't have a sense of humor. Well these pictures prove we're wrong. Since it's inception, photography has ...
I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come.
I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.
I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth.
So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her.

My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
