Gone fishing in 1901...this black sea bass weighed in at a whopping 363 lbs! So in awe of women from 100+ years ago who did everything while dressed immaculately.
That might not be a cane rod. At that time, rods were also made from maple, ironwood, hickory, and other woods. And they were generally made in sections with the midsection generally made of ironwood with the tip made of more flexible strips of cane glued together to make them lightweight but strong.
People did go out deep sea fishing and they did use rods, the same way people do now. The material used for the rods have changed, but the old rods caught very large fish, too.
"It is estimated that the Giant Black Sea Bass is capable of growing to lengths of over 7 feet and weighing over 700 pounds. The largest species ever caught by a sport fisherman with rod and reel, weighing 563 pounds, was caught off of Anacapa Island in 1968."
So much clothes on I get HOT 🌚 looking at it.. hot a** corset sweating PROFUSE--LY.. BLACK!.. Heels! HAT!! Stockings!!.. Blazing HOT GLARE from the water!! NO CLOUDS!!.. NO WIND!! FISH AND HEAT IN HOT a** BLACK DRESS FULLY FURNISHED 🌚
How do you know there was no wind, no clouds, and blazing hot? It could easily have been a cloudy autumn day. The guy in the boat behind her seems to have on a jacket.
And why are you assuming she was wearing heels? Women often wore low-heeled working shoes and hiking shoes. And there's also no reason to claim she was out fishing in that outfit. She could easily have lived not far away and went home to change clothes for the photograph.
Can't say anything without someone picking it apart. Reasons are beyond me when all in life matters to do is try and solve and resolve everyone's comments but your own. Narcissist annoying.
Anthony J. Martin hot a** black dress is right!! I have a civil war outfit. Wore it for an event in the summer. I thought I was going to pass put from heat stroke just walking!🤣
Anthony J. Martin all the under garments except the corset, where made of natural fibers. This outfit was not as hot as you would think. I am a living history presenter and regularly dress in full period garb. Even at the height of summer, its surprisingly comfortable.
I'm going to guess that she probably didn't fish in that outfit. More than likely, she went home or back to her hotel to change into her best dress before having her photo taken.
Anita L. Russell they wore these kind of dresses all the time back then, no matter what chore or event. I think the dress probably reeks of fish and she probably had to wash the hell out of it. We can’t imagine fishing in a dress and petticoat, but then again people these days don’t even want to wear a lil mask. Lol
My maternal grandmother (born 1874) often went out on a fishing boat with the men when the colder weather came and the harvest on their farm was done. And she brought home, cleaned, and cooked the fish they'd all caught. My mother, who was born in 1908, loved to fish, and she and my dad fished a lot, especially before I was born (she was 40 when I came along).
All the other photos I posted of men with record catches of black sea bass used rods and reels, too. My dad still had his old rod and reel from his deep sea fishing days, and I can vouch for how strong it was.
After all, people fished for a living for centuries before graphite and fiberglass rods came into use in the 1960's. How do you figure they caught large fish?? Do you think people "back then" were incapable of hauling in a large fish or that women in the lower and middle classes didn't work as hard as the men, including women who were blacksmiths, who plowed fields, chopped wood and split logs (heck, I spent years doing that because we heated with a woodstove for decades!)? They couldn't vote, but they were essential in the economy and survival of the community and family.
Yes, there were larger fish back in the days prior to pollution, and over fishing. There are photos of just enormous fish that were caught from piers or close to shore on small boats.
While fishing can be a commercial endeavor or practiced to feed a community, it is also a "sport" for millions of people - these are their photos.
Fish have been around for over 450 million years - much longer than humans - and they have been a source of food for modern humans for at least the past 200,000 years. At first, and even now at times,...

This decade began with a lot of changes: After 63+ years on throne, Queen Victoria died. William McKinley was assassinated and Teddy Roosevelt became President. Wilbur and Orville Wright flew the fir...

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come.
I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.
I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth.
So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her.

My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
