Markgräflerin (Woman from Markgräflerland, Germany)
A postcard of a woman wearing the traditional folk costume of Markgräflerland, Germany. The name "Kehl" is written lightly across the bottom in pencil, but that may only be the name of the postcard dealer.

Judging by the style of this card, it was most likely published in the 1900s or 1910s.
Date & Place: in Markgräflerland County, Baden-Württemberg Germany

I've seen similar headdresses on mannequins in Black Forest Costume Museum and I believe the ladies used their own hair to complete the look.

In older, more traditional times, a woman's hair was her pride, and, especially in the Slavic and eastern European countries, their hair was grown from childhood for many long years, until marriage and often beyond it.
While they didn't adopt the more severe hair and full head and face coverings of Asian and north African peoples, a married woman's hair was never seen worn down, or loose, in public. That sight was reserved for her husband, alone at night in the privacy of their home.
As for this maiden, that is most assuredly her hair, as wearing it in public in a semi-loose fashion like this wasn't against the mores of their people and the time.

What concerns me is the color. Too dark for a German woman. I am not sure what kind of hair dyes they had back then, but definitely not her natural hair color. But she looks absolutely stunning and that smile is everything!

This postcard was taken in 1840, the ideology that you're proclaiming was started from the Nazis who reigned from 1920 and 1945, that created and supported the ideology of National Socialism. Its precursor, the German Workers' Party, existed from 1919 to 1920 . So this was taken before that ideology was even established. She cannot possibly be from both eras at the same time. 1840 is where this picture stands, she has dark hair and is german. You are wrong and everything you ever knew is wrong.

Siv Gaby Constantin it is a black and white photograph that has been colorised, the original dark colour (whatever it was, because yes, Germans also have dark hair) may have been colorised to the same black as the shawl.

I did a Google search for "markgraflerin" and that appears to be long fringe attached to to the edges of the bow. Here are some similar photos from Wikimedia.

I love antique photographs. In addition to sharing old photos of my family, I am also going through my collection of "antique store people". They've been sitting in a storage tub in my back room much too long and maybe some of their families will be able to find them here. If I'm able to identify the people in the photo, I upload it not only to AncientFaces, but also to Ancestry, FamilySearch, and Find-A-Grave. If the person in the picture is a military veteran, the photo also goes on Fold3. I figure that the more places I upload these pictures, the greater the chance that a relative will be able to find them.

Left for Texas and changed his name to Jesse Patrick Chastun. Admitted on his death bed that he was in fact, Gabriel Presley Sturkey of SC.

My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth. My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
