In 1863, he was discharged from service and married on February 7, 1865 he married Elizabeth Ann Hogue. Migrating west to Oregon in 1878, the family settled on the banks of Milk Creek, about a mile Northeast of Colton, Clackamas County, Oregon,
By the time he passed in 1908, he had seven children, thirteen grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He was well known throughout Colton, and in other neighboring communities, like Elwood.
He took ill during the last four months of his life, becoming bed-ridden the last four days of his life. The official cause of death was listed as 'Senility'.
Mildred Emily Freeman Axmaker recounted a poem that Grandpa Dix would recite to tell all of the names of his boys -- "It's no use (Uncle Ulysses) for os (Uncle Oscar) to plant oats (Uncle Otis) because the jaybirds (Uncle Jay [Jehu]) will (Uncle William) eat them all up."
